Dentata sits in the tradition of the Sheela Na Gig: architectural grotesques which were found throughout medieval Europe whose apotropaic magic was said to ward spirits away. They hark to the remnants of a pre-Christian fertility or mother goddess religion. Feminist scholars have appropriated the image as a gesture of rebellion against misogyny.
