“We fitted together like the two halves of an oyster-shell.” says Nancy in Tipping the Velvet. The iconography of the oyster wove its way into Colbert’s practice after her encounter with its writer Sarah Waters. Here, the oyster becomes a playful baptismal font, taking centre-stage in her alternative place of worship and celebration. A pearl on its side harks back to Sufi tradition where it represents the realisation of our true natures and sweetest knowledge of enlightenment.
